Horse + Bamboo is an arts company that has been based in the Rossendale Valley since 1978, when it was founded by Bob Frith – who remains its Joint Artistic Director. The company combines a rootedness in the local community with a national and international reputation for delivering ambitious and successful large-scale projects, including developing creative community projects.

The company has a long history of touring innovative visual theatre productions. These have always been written, designed, made and directed by the company itself.

More recently Horse + Bamboo has opened an arts centre (“The Boo”) in Waterfoot which runs a programme of family-based activities throughout the year as well as annual festivals and training projects. It is connected with and positioned to work alongside local schools, the library service, health organisations, community organisations and other local agencies.

Over the past few years Horse + Bamboo has been running the Different Moons project with South Asian heritage groups in Haslingden, led by the writer Shamshad Khan. It has also been central in opening the Apna space in Haslingden, led by Arry Nessa.
